What is a Flute?
Flutes make up both a family of instruments known as the woodwinds, and a single instrument known as, of course, the flute. Flutes are an aerophone, or reed-less woodwind instrument that creates sound by blowing a stream of air across an opening. There is a variety of different types of flutes, which all depends on their range, or how their pitched. Some of the various families of flutes include: the bass flute (lowest pitched flute), the alto flute, the concert flute, and the piccolo (highest pitched flute).
People who play the flute are referred to as: a flute player, flautist, flutist, or a fluter
The flute is most commonly used in bands, or orchestra's where it is apart of the woodwind section with other instruments such as clarinets, and oboes. In performances, flutes are known to carry the melody because of their high pitch over the rest of the orchestra.
Flutes are also the earliest known instrument. There is a number of flutes dating back to over 35 000 years ago, where flutes have been found in areas such as Germany. Those flutes prove that there was musical tradition from the early presence of man kind in ancient Europe, that still continues in our modern world today.
