Cleaning your Instrument
Before, and after using your flute, it is a good idea to wash out the mouth piece with an antibacterial solution. This cleansing will prevent the growth of any harmful germs that can either affect you, or possibly damage your instrument. *tip* this cleaning comes in handy during cold, and flu season. Swabbing out your instrument with a dry, clean cloth is also a good idea in taking care of your flute. Removing all the excess build up of spit will help with your sound, tone, and will keep your instrument from developing a bad odour.
Other handy tips to do with your instrument is to not wear any chap stick, lipgloss, or types of balms on your lips or mouth when playing. The chemicals in the lip balm can actually erode your instruments mouth piece, and cause severe damage to your flute. A way of knowing if this is happening to your instrument is if there is a red, or coloured ring forming around your mouth piece where your lips sit.
Never, under any circumstances should you play your instrument while chewing gum, or having a substance in your mouth. Even by accident, if the gum or food get's stuck in your instrument, it can easily wreck your instrument, and prevent you from playing.
